Panel: Church and Academia (Part 2)

Four MennoNerds gathered in a panel to discuss the relationship between the Church and academia, just in time for back-to-school season. In this part 2, they focus on questions around Christian educational institutions.
Note that we had a lot of technical difficulties with this one. We’ve done what we can with editing, but a few things might stand out, like:

Katelin introduces herself and then disappears for half an hour (mic problems)
Deborah doesn’t quite seem to be part of the conversation, with nobody really acknowledging her points (they didn’t know them, again because of mic problems; she recorded again later to be inserted in the right spots)
The video for the main recording is out of sync with the audio (seems to be happening with any Google Hangout on Air edited in Adobe Premiere CS6)
Drew and Sam cut out and missed their sign-off opportunity, although Sam did record one to be added after the fact.

Panel: Church and Academia (Part 1)

Four MennoNerds gathered in a panel to discuss the relationship between the Church and academia, just in time for back-to-school season. In this part 1, they cover questions like:

What is academia?
In what ways does the Church need academia?
In what ways does the academy need the Church?
How can we build better bridges between the Church and academia than often exists, at least in some segments of the Church?
What advice would you give to somebody considering entering the academic world?
What kind of sacrifices are involved in a life of academics?

Simplicity and Sustainability Panel Follow-up: Steve Kimes

Steve responds to the first half of the Simplicity and Sustainability panel with a few key thoughts:

Responding to Hilary’s definition, Steve points out that in one sense, Jesus does say we do initially need to focus on things because we are already focused on things. He cites Luke 16:9 where Jesus suggests using our wealth to make friends with the poor.
Responding to Micael’s comments about house churches, Steve suggests that a church building is good as long as it is well-used. It should be busy 7 days a week, mostly for those who otherwise have no place to go.
On the anthropocentrism discussion, Steve picks up on a quote from Paul about our dominion over the earth meaning to be good stewards.

Simplicity and Sustainability Panel Part 2 – Practicalities

In the second half of the panel, some of the MennoNerds discuss several practical questions about living simply and sustainably. These include discussions like:

Can we learn from Amish and Hutterite communities?
Does technology make life simpler or more complicated?
What is the community of goods and how does it work?
What is it like to sell almost everything you own?
How do we avoid this being a pursuit of the comfortable middle class while leaving the poor behind?
How do we radicalize the suburbs to move them in this direction?

We hope for there to be follow-up videos from other panelists who unfortunately had to withdraw on short notice, so stay tuned to mennonerds.com and our YouTube channel for those.

Simplicity and Sustainability Panel Part 1 – Definitions and Anthropocentrism

Some MennoNerds gathered for a panel to discuss topics of simplicity and sustainability. In this first half of the panel, they covered topics like:

defining simplicity
biblical arguments for the need of simplicity
biblical arguments for the need of environmental sustainability and creation care
whether Christianity should be seen as an anthropocentric religion, i.e. how do we deal with ideas like having dominion over the Earth?

In the second half, they will continue the conversation with ideas like the community of goods and the relationship between living simply and alleviating poverty.

Panel: Christians and Politics Part 3: Would You…?

In this third and final section of a MennoNerds panel on the relationship between Christians and politics, we go through a few quick questions asking if the panelists would consider it a conflict with their faith to participate in various government acts. We wrap up by answering a viewer question about the politics of Jesus today.

We had a very eclectic group for our fourth MennoNerds online Hangout, spanning a broad geographical span (Denver, CO, USA to Uppsala, Sweden). This represented a range of perspectives as we talked about denominations, gatherings, and their purposes.
